Black Churches in Orlando

  • The Black church has always been a major advocate pushing for Black empowerment. Since the early days, when slaves used to meet and pray for a better future to the Civil Rights Movement, it was an institution where members of the Black community could find solace and sanctuary.
  • The Black church was a great place to feel empowered and to encourage others to join in activist efforts. Harry T. Moore wouldn’t have been able to register thousands of Black voters had it not been for the church. So when was the first Black church established in Orlando?
  • The Black church has played a long time role in organizing and supporting the Civil Rights Movement: from Martin Luther King, Jr. and his Southern Christian Leadership Conference, to a networking system to encourage disenfranchised Black people to vote and join activist groups. The church continues to play a vital role as a focal point for activism today.
