For 'Little Rock Nine' Member, Current Political Tensions Across U.S. Echo 1950s
It’s been more than sixty years since the United States Supreme Court issued its landmark ruling to desegregate schools. That decision heightened public tension across the country, which played out prominently in Arkansas where, in 1957, nine black teenagers were escorted by federal troops to attend the once white-only high school, Little Rock Central High School. The students came to be known as the Little Rock Nine. One of the surviving members, Minniejean Brown Trickey says today’s political climate looks a lot like the one in which she grew up.

Students aren’t the only ones affected by their outcomes.A new Orange County report shows little evidence Florida’s teacher merit-pay law is raising student achievement. The state legislature adopted the law in 2011. It ties teacher pay and promotions to how students perform on standardized tests. Brevard Superintendent Desmond Blackburn weighs in.
