Japan Events Revive Germany's Anti-Nuclear Stance
Germany is conducting safety reviews of its 17 nuclear power plants, and is temporarily shutting down the seven oldest reactors. The plants had been due to close by 2020, but in a controversial decision last fall, Chancellor Angela Merkel decided to keep them running. With an important regional election looming, Merkel has decided to shelve the extension plan while the safety reviews take place.
