Senate Confirms Clinton As Secretary Of State
The Senate has voted 94-2 to confirm Hillary Clinton as secretary of State. Clinton was expected to be confirmed Tuesday, but Texas Sen. John Cornyn raised objections, citing foreign contributions to Bill Clinton's foundation.

Charity Organization Helps With Inaugural Meals
DC Central Kitchen, a charity organization, got its start 20 years ago this week by collecting leftover food from the inaugural balls of George H. W. Bush and giving it to the homeless. Now, the group's culinary arts students are doing some of the cooking for this year's inaugural festivities.

Senate Endorses A $350 Billion Check For Obama
President-elect Barack Obama scored an early legislative victory on Capitol Hill Thursday. After intense lobbying by Obama and top economic aides, the Senate voted to release the second half of the $700 billion financial rescue package. When Obama takes office on Tuesday, he will have $350 billion available to battle the financial crisis.

U.N. Protests Israeli Fire On Gaza Facility
The U.N. protested Israeli fire on its warehouse in Gaza. Israel said Hamas militants were launching rockets from the U.N. compound. Israel also killed a top Hamas leader in its operations in the Gaza Strip. And there was speculation that Israel and Hamas are close to an agreement on a cease-fire.

Holder Calls Waterboarding Torture
Attorney General-nominee Eric Holder has labeled as torture the practice of waterboarding terrorism suspects. Speaking at his confirmation hearing, Holder also said he had learned from the experience surrounding the controversial Clinton-era pardon of financier Marc Rich.

GOP Senators Ready To Grill Holder During Hearing
Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee will question Attorney General nominee Eric Holder at his confirmation hearing Thursday. Holder has strong support in the Senate, but some Republicans on the panel say they will ask him about aspects of his private legal practice and some of his decisions while serving as deputy and acting attorney general under President Clinton.

The Senate is set to vote Thursday on whether to release the second half of the $700 billion financial rescue package. While most Democrats are on board to approve the funds, many Republicans say the bill lacks transparency and accountability.
