The University of Central Florida plans to expand in downtown Orlando.

President John Hitt announced Tuesday the university will partner with Valencia College on a downtown campus that will educate up to 10,000 students.

Hitt says the goal is to expose students to downtown work opportunities and also enhance education in low-income Parramore.

He says the idea is modeled after Arizona State University's downtown campus, which has about 11,000 students.

"They'll tell you it's the best thing they ever did. That it had more of an economic and social impact than the Major League Baseball stadium they put downtown or the NBA arena."

The UCF campus would be located in the Creative Village, a development planned for the site of the now-demolished Amway Arena. The development also would include a digital media cluster, retail and housing.

UCF is the nation's second-largest university after Arizona State with nearly 60,000 students.
