Hamas militants appear to be gaining the upper hand in the fight against gunmen from the rival Fatah movement in the Gaza Strip. There is now no talk of a cease-fire, and the "unity" government has collapsed. A group of Palestinians staged a protest against the fighting and came under fire.

Rep. Studds, a Congressional Pioneer, Dead at 69
Former Rep. Gerry Studds, the first openly gay man elected to Congress, dies at 69. He retired in 1997. Studds was censured by the House in 1983 after admitting an affair with a 17-year-old former page, but won re-election.

Britain Charges 11, Releases 1 in Aug. 10 Case
In London, 11 people have been charged in the alleged plot to blow up trans-Atlantic jetliners. With the release of one woman, an additional 11 suspects remain in custody. A police spokesman says that in conducting 69 searches, officers seized 400 computers.

Czechs Affirm No. 2 Ranking; Italy Tops Ghana
The Czech Republic had the biggest win of the World Cup, routing the United States 3-0 Monday. Earlier, Australia staged a late comeback, scoring three goals from the 84th minute until the final whistle to beat Japan, 3-1. Italy beat Ghana 2-0 in the late game.
