Orange, Volusia Voters Approve Sales Tax For Schools

Orange County Public Schools says it can move ahead with plans to renovate 59 schools- thanks to a half penny sales tax extension.

Voters on Tuesday  approved the ten year extension, which supporters say will go towards renovating existing schools and upgrades to classroom technology.

OCPS says the tax should raise 2 billion dollars before it expires in 2025.

Opponents raised fears the tax extension would put money in the hands of developers rather than educators.

However the school district says it’s vital for upgrading electrical, air conditioning and plumbing and other renovations.

In Volusia County, voters also approved a 15 year extension to a half cent sales tax for school security, technology and capital improvements.

The tax extension was one of two special referenda on the Orange County ballot.

Voters also approved mandatory paid sick time- but that initiative is overruled by a state law that is already in effect.
